Weird Claims We Can Cover (& Have Covered!)
Insurance is useful for a variety of reasons, as most people know. However, many people assume insurance will only cover common incidents, like a car accident, or house fire.
In reality, you can be reimbursed for a host of weird incidents.
For example, you know that your homeowners’ insurance covers your belongings and dwellings, but it covers more than just that. If a property dispute between you and your neighbors results in a lawsuit, your homeowners’ insurance will likely cover it under liability.
Some clients have shared their odd claim stories on the Internet, including one person who was covered when he accidentally shot his own truck. They’re just one of many people who have filed a claim that is not typically covered.
We’ve had our share of wacky claims, too; it makes our day when we get to help you navigate a situation we’ve never seen before. We love a challenge!
Without any further ado, here are some of the oddest situations we’ve encountered and how we’ve covered them.
1. One of our clients was boiling eggs and forgot about them, burning the eggs. Although the fire didn’t spread too far, the smell traveled fast, and soon the whole house smelled like burnt eggs.
The client called Trucordia and told them about the incident. They called it a “protein fire,” and said the smell was challenging to get out. They turned in the claim, and the carrier covered it under fire damage.
2. Another client was on their way to purchase a new truck. They were driving their old truck to the site, as they were going to trade it in for the new one. They parked in the lot right in front of the shiny new truck.
While they gathered their personal belongings from the old truck, they accidentally bumped the gear shift, putting the car in reverse. Unfortunately, they also nudged the emergency brake at the same time, sending the old truck careening into the new one.
And to top it off, they hadn’t even signed the paperwork on their new truck yet! Happily, their insurance company marked it as an at-fault accident and paid for the damages.
3. One client had some jewelry that had gone missing (and oddly, a cow). They claimed the items were stolen by one of their family members. In addition, the client asked their insurance company to inspect some mysterious moisture in their garage, assuming it was poison.
The carrier sent a group to test the moisture, and happily, they couldn’t pinpoint any toxicity. The carrier also paid the claim over the missing jewelry to the maximum the policy allowed (although nothing came of the cow, unfortunately).
4. One client had invited a friend over to their home, and their friend lost their very expensive glasses. The friend filed a claim over the glasses, but happily, the client’s policy covered the claim.
5. Our last example: one client’s car was stolen by their son. Their son drove the car to a new location, and the client followed them to try and get the car back. When the client tried recover the car, the son drove away in the said car and ended up injuring his mother. The client’s husband received a payout for personal injury to his wife.
