Why do contractors have to get a bond?

In Washington State, contractors are required to be registered with the Department of Labor & Industries, plus carry a bond and be insured to do business. Requiring contractors to obtain a surety bond is designed to protect the public from the contractor performing an unlawful act that violates the states contract code.

The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries has a thorough guide on their website of everything needed to become a construction contractor.

Contractors looking for a bond, also called a surety bond, have two options. Depending on the work you will be performing, you may need to obtain a general or specialty contractor bond. The amounts are:

  • $12,000 for general contractors
  • $6,000 for specialty contractors

In addition to your license type there are different bonds for certain types of work, such as electricians, elevator repair, and fire sprinkler systems.
