Broadform Insurance
Broadform insurance is a form of insurance often referred to as “non-standard” insurance. It is different because it insures the driver, not the vehicle. Broad form insurance is intended for people who do not have a car and need insurance or for people who have one or more vehicles that the owner is choosing not to insure.
This coverage is offered in Washington, one of only a few states that have it.
The reasons to choose a broad form insurance policy vary but can include:
- You own multiple vehicles and want a low rate
- You do not own any vehicles
- You want to meet state insurance requirements
- You do not want or need physical insurance coverage on your vehicles
- You have an SR-22 filing and need to meet state requirements
What is a Broadform insurance policy?
Because this insurance policy is not assigned to a specific vehicle, Broadform insurance only insures the driver listed on the declarations card and will not cover physical damage to any vehicle. Any repairs needed to a car due to an accident or other objects hitting the vehicle would not be protected and would need to be paid for out-of-pocket. In addition, a Broadform policy only covers the insured driver and does not extend to other drivers who may borrow or use the vehicle.
A Broadform insurance policy consists of three parts:
- Bodily injury liability and property damage
- Personal injury protection
- Uninsured motorist with bodily injury and property damage
Personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverages may be declined with a signature, but it is not recommended.
If an accident and the vehicle is being driven have an insurance policy that specifically covers the vehicle, the Broadform policy is secondary (or excess), and the policy for the vehicle’s policy is primary.
In summary, keep these points in mind when considering a Broadform insurance policy:
- Only you are covered, not a family member, not a household member – only you.
- Coverage does not follow a vehicle you own. If you let someone borrow a vehicle you own, they get into an accident, you may be held liable, but the insurance will not cover this loss.
- This coverage does not transfer to other types of vehicles, including motorcycles or RVs.
- You do not have any physical damage coverage for the vehicle you are driving.
- This type of insurance does not cover you while driving for business use.
- Broadform insurance is excess over any other insurance policy available.
